2016 Pathways Schedule

Following the NSWJRU State Championships each year the best of the U14, U15, U16 and U17 boys have an opportunity to represent their Zone, City and State as part of a pathways development program.

SJRU Zone teams are chosen from the NSWJRU State Championships held over the June long weekend, 10th – 12th June 2017. Venues teams will be playing at are as follows:

Under 14s
Endeavour Park, Orange, hosted by Orange City and Orange Emus Rugby Club.

Under 15s
Narrabeen Academy of Sport

Under 16s
Narrabeen Academy of Sport

Sydney Junior Rugby Union and New South Wales Junior Rugby Union through the appointment of Independent Coaches and Selectors will select boys to fill positions within the following teams for the 2017 Representative season…

The NSWJRU coaching teams and selectors will choose a squad of players from across each Zone to contest the regionals. Each Zone (North, South and West) will select 15 players and then the Barbarians will select 15 players. Following these selections, the Zones will be allowed to choose their reserve players.

The teams will then play at the Regional Tournament on the 1st and 2nd July 2017, at a venue in the metro area to be confirmed.

SJRU Barbarian Teams

The Bar Bars are chosen from the NSWJRU State Championships held over the June long weekend, 10th – 12th June 2017.

The NSWJRU coaching teams and selectors will choose a squad of players from across each Zone to contest the Regionals. Each Zone (North, South and West) will select 15 players and then the Barbarians will select 15 players. The Barbarians may choose their reserves after the Zones have picked theirs. The idea of the Barbarian side is to pick up the skilled players that might slip through the selection net.

The aim is to showcase these players and their skills in the Regionals with selections for the Sydney team as the goal, aside from the Regional contest itself.

The teams will then play at the Regional Tournament on the 1st and 2nd of July 2017 at a venue in the metro area to be confirmed.

Sydney Junior Teams

The Under 14 to Under 16 teams are chosen from the SJRU Regionals on the 1st and 2nd July 2017. These teams will play against Country on 6th August 2017 at a country venue to be confirmed.

The Sydney U16s will then take part in U16 Nationals at the Southport School in Queensland from the 24th to the 30th of September 2017.

The under 14s will select a squad of 40 players from the State Championships. These players will train as a squad and then will play a ‘Possibles’ vs ‘Probables’ at the Regionals as a selection trial for the Sydney team on the weekend of 1st and 2nd of July.

The U15s and U16s will select a Sydney team from the SJRU Regionals on the 1st and 2nd July 2017.

The U17s Sydney team will be selected directly from the NSWJRU State Championships held over the June long weekend, 10th – 12th June 2017.

The U18s squad will be selected directly from a series of trials the following has been proposed;

  • Sydney U18 Trial Round Robin (last two weekends in March, venue TBA)
  • Sydney U18 vs. NSW Country (early June, venue TBA)
  • Sydney U18 vs. GPS 111 (22nd of June at Boronia Park Hunters Hill)

Thereafter the U18 Rep program is as follows;

  • NSWJRU U18 vs. Australian Schools Combined States (late June)
  • NSWJRU U18 vs. NSW Schools 111 (late June).

Pathways to Gold - U15 Junior Gold Cup

Rugby’s Pathway to Gold program (aka Junior Gold Cup) is a national youth talent development and selection program from grass roots through to high performance rugby coordinated by the Australian Rugby Union’s Pathway and Performance Department.

Rugby’s Pathway to Gold program endeavors to develop our future Wallabies and Olympians from throughout Australia with an accessible, highly effective and attractive pathway of high performance player development and competition programs delivered and supported by experienced and proven coaches and staff.

The program also aims to support key stakeholders including coaches and program coordinators at club, school, regional and provincial level. The program provides key milestone performance measurement opportunities in the form of national and/or international competition at the Under 15 level.

The Pathway to Gold program will ensure Australia remains a world rugby power on an ongoing basis at all levels of the game and will provide an enjoyable and rewarding rugby experience for all selected players and coaches.

The key dates for the 2017 Junior Gold Cup Program are as follows:

  • 10th of September
  • 17th of September
  • 23rd of September
  • 30th of Sepember
